Join us and celebrate Ms Jasmine Chung’s achievement—a 2024 graduate of the Double Degree programme, BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature and BEd (Hons) in English Language Teaching! 🎉
After completing her Honours Project (supervised by Prof. Bennedict Rowlett), her work has been published as a journal article co-authored with Prof. Bennedict Rowlett!
Title: “Queer(ing) language practices in a Hong Kong lesbian dating app”
Journal: Discourse, Context & Media

We had a few words from Jasmine:

Agora: Congratulations, Jasmine! What is the article about?
Jasmine: Thank you! This study explores how Hong Kong lesbian dating app users negotiate identity labels and gender expressions online, revealing evolving queer linguistic practices and changing understandings of sexuality, intimacy, and community.
Agora: How did you revise the project from an HP to a published article?
Jasmine: The project began as my Honours Project, and Professor Rowlett greatly supported me throughout both the research and revision process. One of the most challenging aspects was collecting and coding the data for critical linguistic analysis, as the language used in the dating app was highly nuanced, context-dependent, and often blended local identity labels with evolving expressions of gender and sexuality. During revision, we strengthened the theoretical framework, refined the methodology and data presentation, and reconsidered the findings through a more critical lens within queer linguistics and digital discourse studies. We also revised the visuals, clarified key definitions, and expanded the literature review to better support and contextualise the study. These revisions helped transform the project into a more rigorous and critically engaged academic article.
Agora: Do you have a message to students who are working on their HPs/Capstones?
Jasmine: Stay curious about your academic interests and trust your ideas. An Honours Project is a valuable opportunity to explore meaningful questions, develop critical thinking, and turn your passion into impactful research. Keep questioning, keep thinking, and make your ideas happen.
